Intrinsic spin Hall effect in the presence of extrinsic spin-orbit scattering

چکیده
Intrinsic and extrinsic spin Hall effects are considered together on an equal theoretical footing for the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in two-dimensional 2D electron and hole systems, using the diagrammatic method for calculating the spin Hall conductivity. Our analytic theory for the 2D holes shows the expected lowest-order additive result for the spin Hall conductivity. But, the 2D electrons manifest a very surprising result, exhibiting a non-analyticity in the Rashba coupling strength where the strictly extrinsic spin Hall conductivity for =0 cannot be recovered from the →0 limit of the combined theory. The theoretical results are discussed in the context of existing experimental results.

Interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms to the spin Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas
In order to describe correctly the interplay of extrinsic and intrinsic spin-orbit mechanisms to the spin Hall effect, it is necessary to consider different sources of spin relaxation. We take into account the spin relaxation time τDP due to the Dyakonov-Perel mechanism as well as the Elliot-Yafet spin-relaxation time τs due to the spin-orbit scattering from impurities. The total spin Hall cond...

We show that the extrinsic spin Hall effect can be engineered in monolayer graphene by decoration with small doses of adatoms, molecules, or nanoparticles originating local spin-orbit perturbations. The analysis of the single impurity scattering problem shows that intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit local couplings enhance the spin Hall effect via skew scattering of charge carriers in the resonant ...
متن کاملInverse spin Hall effect and anomalous Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas
We study the coupled dynamics of spin and charge currents in a two-dimensional electron gas in the transport diffusive regime. For systems with inversion symmetry there are established relations between the spin Hall effect, the anomalous Hall effect and the inverse spin Hall effect. However, in two-dimensional electron gases of semiconductors like GaAs, inversion symmetry is broken so that the...
متن کاملSpin Hall Effect Induced by Resonant Skew Scattering in Graphene
The spin Hall effect is the appearance of a transverse spin current in a non-magnetic conductor by pure electrical control. The extrinsic spin Hall effect originates from the spin-dependent skew scattering of electrons by impurities in the presence of SOI and can be used for an efficient conversion of charge current into spin-polarized currents. Recently, it has been explored for replacing ferr...
متن کاملAnomalous spin Hall effects in Dresselhaus (110) quantum wells
Anomalous spin Hall effects that belong to the intrinsic type in Dresselhaus (110) quantum wells are discussed. For the out-of-plane spin component, antisymmetric current-induced spin polarization induces opposite spin Hall accumulation, even though there is no spin-orbit force due to Dresselhaus (110) coupling. A surprising feature of this spin Hall induction is that the spin accumulation sign...
